12º Task

Intercultural Communication

Cultural patterns in Colombia that I think a foreign visitor should be aware of a foreign in order to adjust more easily and avoid intercultural conflicts and misunderstandings.

  • The main topic to be avoided is the drug traffic problem and the stereotypes associated with it. A minuscule proportion of the population is involved in drug trafficking, and all Colombians are very sensitive to the issue.
  • Colombians like to get close to communicate. They’ll move their face as close as a foot from yours and poke your arm (your leg if you’re seated) to make their points.
  • They’re great talkers and the volume can be high.
  • Serious faces, direct and sustained eye contact in the highlands, give way to broader smiles and quicker.
  • Display of anger is common, however, it draws attention from the public, and that is something that you would like to avoid.
  • Colombian business environment is formal, and when addressing a person with a senior position within an organization is a general practice to address him/her as "Señor (last name)".
  • Colombia is increasingly equalitarian with regard to the gender issue; however, women are not well perceived in some types of jobs such as aircraft pilots. Is common these days to see women high up in the corporate ladder, and gender is not an issue at all if her level of education is comparable to her colleagues.
  • Colombian people are very outgoing. They like a lot the parties and go dancing and drinking every weekend.
  • Colombian people are very kind they always want to help you in whatever they can.

11º Task

Should Chimpanzees Be Considered ‘Persons’?

Whose viewpoint is expressed?

The viewpoint is from Mr. Sebo, the director of the animal studies program at New York University.

What does the author want us to think?

The author wants to make us think about of the possibility that chimpanzees can be considered persons because many gestures, actions, and expressions are so related to human behavior. The only aspect that chimpanzees can't do is to talk, but they can communicate themselves through actions and gestures. They also want to make us think in that humans have a lot of rights and animals few rights.

What viewpoint is not expressed? Whose voice do we not hear?

I think that the point of view of a linguist because they know perfectly that communication also include gestures to make ourselves understood, it means that in some point of view chimpanzees can be considered "persons".

What is an alternative perspective of the text?

An alternative perspective is that a long time ago, humans came from the "Homo- sapiens", it means that we have evolved because we came from chimpanzees, why can't we considered them as "persons" if they have a long on aspects in common.

Can you think of other questions this text responds to?

To the evolution of humans.

9° Task. Draft

ICTs in classrooms.

As we know, technology is claimed to be a universal language and is regarded as one of the influential agents of globalization. On the global front, ICTs (Information and Communications Technology) is already creating new, open learning environments in the field of education. According to Murray, 2007, the use of technology in education is an emerging field of study as it involves the introduction of new instructional possibilities. It is also important to mention that the use of ICTs improves the learning of a second language because nowadays the majority of the sources to learning a second language is on the internet.
Leaving traditional education. Twenty years ago, the field of education was focused primarily on teachers, students were always obeying rules to teachers in a way in which they have to learn everything by heart, they do not count with the use of a CD player to improve their listening skills, they do not count on a TV, they do not count on anything in order to achieve the perfection of speaking a second language. But with the pass of the years, many technological devices are in our hands.
Expand the access to learn a second language. When we talk about the learning of a second language we can mention that each day the majority of the resources to stay in contact with a second language are on the internet. Thus, we can practice and try to improve the main skills throughout the use of ICTs. For instance, if we want to practice speaking skill, we can make contact with a native person through the internet and practice it. The main problem is the difficult access to the internet in order to achieve new insights in a second language but it is our decision because if we are really interested in improving the main skills we can look for many solutions and try to overcome those difficulties.
Improving the quality of learning a second language. Teachers should be aware of the importance of the use of ICTs in classrooms because if they use in the best way they will see the improvement that their students can achieve. For instance, teachers can bring to class recordings of native people in order to improve their listening skill, also teachers would give to their students a lot of websites no practice English and all the major skills. Teachers and students should be aware of that internet have many dangerous websites that can affect them, so they have to be careful with the information that they would find on many websites. But students and teachers should understand that they have to use internet for educational purposes and under some conditions.

A teacher should implement ICTs under some conditions to get students involve with a second language, taking into account that we should use internet for educational purposes and in order to improve all the major skills in a language
